Integrate Your Motion Capture in Fortnite

Last week, Fortnite released the long-awaited Creative 2.0 mode, also known as the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). It has been taking shape for a long time, making the Fortnite community very excited, especially after the release of Unreal Engine 5. Designed to coexist with current devices, this unreal Editor offers a wide range of games and experiences, from highly stylized cel-shaded team fights to ultra-realistic simulations, all playable directly within your installed Fortnite version. There’s no doubt this new Fortnite unreal editor will push the limits of creativity and allow players and content creators to enhance their production like never before. At LaSource we have been really excited about it since it enables creators to integrate Move.ai motion capture in the editor!

Move.ai x Fortnite

Thanks to Move’ motion capture technology, every players, creators and developers can now capture personnalised scenes, import them into Fortnite, and so with a very affordable solution (Move.ai) that has proven to be remarkably accurate. As Jae mentioned in his tutorial below “Today, we are gonna be making history, as far as I know, this has never been done before”. Because yes, it is a true revolution in terms of creating ultra personalised content and using it in video games.

Why it Matters

If we take a step back on this and not only think from an individual perspective but as a business, it could have a significant impact for game editors and brands, rightsholders. For game editors, it could enable them to produce cinematics and character much faster, thus significantly reducing production costs and increasing the field of possibilities. For brands and rightsholders, they could use this combination to import their athletes and other advocates into Fortnite universe and create unique experiences for players. Some famous sports brands already worked with Fortnite to take over the creative mode. With motion capture, they could integrate cutscene with athletes, emotes, and more.

And what if Fortnite lets its players go one step further by enabling avatar personnalisation (running style, celebrations, posture) in every game mode? As a player, the only thing you would have to do is recording your motion and import it through the Unreal Editor. The term « personalization » would then be a euphemism. Business-wise, Fortnite could let players to sell their animations and dances publicly to become one of the biggest “open-gaming”marketplace. Possibilities seem wide and this is to be continued...
